Frank Beamer announced today at the weekly press conference that Sean Glennon will be the starting quarterback for this weekend’s game against East Carolina in Charlotte, NC.

It was also stated that Tyrod Taylor will be redshirted “as of today”, according to Beamer. “That is our plan as of today”, Beamer noted during the conference. It will remain to be seen what Glennon will actually be able to accomplish this year.

R.I.P. Leroi Moore

SpitzerTailgate.com would like to remember the life of Leroi Moore, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band.  Leroi “died Tuesday from complications stemming from injuries he sustained in an ATV accident.” Leroi sustained these injuries on June 30 on his farm in Charlottesville, VA.

The death of Leroi came unexpectedly to his friends and family.  It seems that Leroi had returned to Los Angeles to complete an extensive rehab and he was doing fine.

As an avid music fan, I will sadly miss Leroi and his beautiful saxophone tunes.  There was nothing better to hear Leroi belt it out on “Sweet Up and Down” or “Ants Marching.”  And also as a Virginia Tech alum, I will miss Leroi for the fact of when I look back on The Concert for Virginia Tech last September.  The events of April 16, 2007 were unbelievable and the Dave Matthews Band was nice enough to come to our campus in Blacksburg, VA the following school year.  The night that DMB was in town, us HOKIES were allowed to forget what happened to us the previous April.  And forgot…we did.

I can’t help but to think of the lyrics from DMB’s “Two Step.”  “Celebrate we will…because life is short but sweet for certain.”  Thanks Leroi for being a great musician and a great role model for many people in the world.

Luckett suspended due to DUI

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Zach Luckett was suspended indefinitely from the Virginia Tech football team after scoring his second DUI in the past couple of years.  Luckett backed his vehicle into a dumpster and sped away from the scene of the incident.  Police tracked him down and saw that he was under the influence.  Luckett failed the sobriety test as he scored a .16 BAC.  In football terms, Luckett dropped the pass on 3rd and 10.  He also dropped the ball on his remaining college football career.

What remains to be seen after this?  No one knows.  The receiver position was a big question mark after many VT seniors graduated last year.  Names like Royal, Harper, Morgan, and Hyman will not be on the roster this year.  Dillard and Luckett were our main people for the position this year, but it looks like we may have to put a lot of hope into Ike Whitaker (who has also had his share of alcohol problems) and maybe into potential key players, such as Greg Boone.  Boone will see a different role for himself this year, as he will be playing at wideout.  Don’t forget…Boone scored 3 touchdowns in last Saturday’s scrimmage.

As an alum of Virginia Tech, I know that there are a lot of distractions at college.  Drinking and driving though is something that is not recommended or approved of.  You would think that a nice cheerleader or some freshman girl would love to drive Luckett around after him getting blitzed (in the drunk sense…not football sense).  As I polish off a Genesee beer, heres to you, Luckett!

“Should we give Glennon a clean slate?”

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

glennonborat.jpg

The following is a post from one of our partner sites, Tyrod-Taylor.com.  Enjoy the following commentary from Bradley J.

“I have a tendency to think that I should allow Glennon to start fresh in my mind this season.  Thats a tough demand, however because of all the things I remember going wrong…that somehow I have blamed him for.  We don’t lose many games overall, but except for 2007 I blame Glennon for most of them.  Boston College last year really wasn’t his fault, LSU just out matched and out played us, and Kansas just out prepared and out coached us.  So I can’t blame any losses on Glennon from last year, but his first pass of the season was a pick.  And, if Tyrod wasn’t started instead of him, he still would be at that mediocre pick throwing level.

Will Sean Glennon step up to new heights as a r-Senior?  He certainly played well the second half of last season.  The coaches claim that neither Tyrod Taylor nor Glennon can separate themselves from each other and firmly claim a starting position.  Doesn’t this beg the question, if Glennon as a r-Senior can’t outplay a t-Sophomore doesn’t that mean he isn’t good enough?  Good thing its the coaches decision and not mine; I don’t know what I would do.

If history is speaking, would it mention Glennon’s melt down versus Georgia in 2006?  Would it mention his terrible performance against Georgia Tech earlier in the season, putting them up by three scores early?  How can I erase these memories of Glennon performing so badly?

I’d like to try, because it seems he’s come around to be a legitimate player.  I recall from the past though, football players telling me how pompous Glennon was.  Multiple inside sources claimed he acted like a total dick.  Well Sean, I’m erasing all of these bad memories; I’m forgetting how you responded to losing the starting job last season; I’m giving you a fresh start in my mind.

In the immortal words of SpitzerTailgate.com - “Sean Glennon….heres to hoping hes not a dbag anymore””
