Something to ponder…Hokies v. Ohio State?

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

This quote sticks out in my head of the following ESPN article, “Will parity run the BCS out of town?”

And that schedule might have played the Buckeyes right into a national title if not for Virginia Tech’s decision to play a home-and-home with LSU several years earlier. If Tech had instead scheduled an easy, nonconference win — even if it had been against nearby James Madison — the Hokies would’ve finished with only one loss and played Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game.

Thats something to think about…you may find the ESPN article here.  As we approach next year’s opening game that is scheduled against Alabama or another SEC opponent…let us remember what is being mentioned in this article.  The best game I have ever seen was when the Hokies played JMU in Blacksburg back in ‘99….remember?  The Michael Vick flip into the endzone…47-0 was the result.

Another update on Marcus…

Friday, June 13th, 2008

As written by the Virginian-Pilot today, former NFL player and brother of Mike “Dogfight” Vick, Marcus Vick was arrested for a DUI in Norfolk, Va early Friday morning. Marcus used his great scrambling skills to get away from a bicycle officer. After driving away from that officer, the me lee continues and eventually leads to Marcus failing a sobriety test.

After SpitzerTailgate having the “Where is…Marcus Vick?” blog post, it seems that Marcus is still up to what he is best at….absolutely nothing. The Vick family has extremely tarnished their name and their limelight is definitely over. I hope that Michael has a great financial advisor and that the Vicks are able to live off of the compounding interest in their bank accounts.

Grant Noel may have sucked at quarterback, but at least he wasn’t fighting dogs and getting DUI’s.

Where is….Marcus Vick???

SpitzerTailgate’s Blog will time to time have sections such as “Where is…(insert name here)?”  This week we start the column with a past Virginia Tech football player; Marcus Vick, the brother of Michael.

I was reminded by Marcus Vick this week by seeing an update on the news feed on the main Facebook page.  Brenden Hill, another past player of the football team, had posted pictures on his Facebook profile entitled “Life of the Party.”  The subtitle of the photo album was “VA and Every where the Money Be!”  I don’t know where the money be…but I take it that Brenden and Marcus do.  The pictures were great to see, as we witness these ex-Hokies party it up!  There’s nothing like us seeing Brenden, Marcus, and also Aaron Rouse party and drink some Grey Goose, or whatever they prefer.  I know it ain’t Evan Williams though…

When we think of Marcus Vick, there are plenty of things that make our mouths taste really bad.  Now he has to be associated with his brother’s acts, which could be classified as more worse than whatever Marcus did before.  I hope this ex-Hokie, ex-Miami Dolphin is enjoying his life and his brother’s money.  I don’t even think NFL-Europe is calling his Blackberry.

Congrats to Seth Greenberg, head coach of VT basketball squad, on the extension of his contract (see story here).  When football season is at a lull, one must direct his attention to other events in the Virginia Tech sports world.  Men’s b-ball is currently 2-2 in ACC play…lets keep knocking down those other teams!!

Beamer to be Grand Marshall @ Martinsville NASCAR race

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

From MartinsvilleSpeedway.com (story here)

Everything is coming up orange in 2008 for Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer.First up for Beamer was the Orange Bowl in Miami where Virginia Tech fell to Kansas on January 3. He’ll follow that up with a trip to Martinsville Speedway and the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on March 30.Beamer, whose Hokies were ranked fifth in the nation headed into the Orange Bowl showdown, has accepted an invitation from Martinsville Speedway to be the Grand Marshal for the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race on March 30.

“It is real privilege for Coach Beamer to agree to be our Grand Marshal,” said Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell. “He is truly one of the premier college football coaches in America. What he has done at Virginia Tech is legendary. And on top of that he’s a good guy that really enjoys NASCAR racing. We’re looking forward to a great day with Coach Beamer.”

Beamer is the most successful football coach in the history of Virginia Tech with a 167-84-2 mark since taking over the program in 1987. His overall coaching record is 209-107-4. He was the national coach of the year in 1999 and is ranked third in wins among all active Division I coaches.

His teams have won three Big East championships and a pair of ACC championships and lost to Florida State in the national championship game after the 1999 season. The Hokies have been to bowl games for 15 consecutive years.

While football is the sport of his passion and livelihood, racing is a sport of relaxation for the Hillsville, VA, native. Twice he has been honorary starter for NASCAR Sprint Cup races, but this will be his first stint as Grand Marshal.

“I’m very honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway,” said Beamer. “I think most people know how much I love racing, and I’m delighted by the honor.”

With team colors of maroon and orange, and having a date in the Orange Bowl, Beamer is the perfect fit for the Goody’s Cool Orange 500, a race named after the newest flavor of Goody’s headache powder.

“Coming off one of the most successful seasons of his illustrious career, Coach Beamer will be a huge hit as grand marshal of the 2008 Goody’s Cool Orange 500,” said Darren Singer, Vice President Marketing, Goody’s Headache Powders.  “With Virginia Tech going to the Orange Bowl this year, it is only fitting to have the Coach kick off the action at the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 with the most famous words in racing – ‘Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!’.”
