Jayski’s Orange Bowl rant
Where shall I start when we begin to think about last night’s game in Miami, FL? As I write this at whatever time on Friday (definitely had to sleep in today…did not return to our place until 3 a.m.), I feel very confused of the outcome between our beloved Hokies and the Kansas Jayhawks. This blog post will review very many details surrounding the day of January 3, 2008.
I begin to wonder about my father’s comment that he said all week before the game; “The Hokies haven’t practiced at all for the bowl game….hell, Beamer doesn’t get paid extra to win bowl games.” That comment is very true, as you could check out coacheshotseat.com to find Beamer’s contract, in which that Beamer only gets a bonus to ‘appear’ in the Orange Bowl and other more elite bowl games….a W in the column does not initiate more money for Frank and his fellow coaches. We all feel that Beamer and his coaches laid down after the ACC win and took it easy for the month of December. The lack of practice is very much a fact also, by talking to a source close to the sports medicine department, in which that VT has not really had a full practice for preparation of the bowl game. A Florida newscast showed the Kansas team getting off a bus to practice in full pads, etc., while VT came off a bus in T-shirt and shorts. These two distinct pictures showed how Kansas was able to dominate in the bowl.
I must also wonder what the players are thinking during this time of holidays and bowl season. We were very much pissed to hear about Branden Ore having to miss the 1st quarter of the game because of coming to a team meeting late. Pissed at first, but almost relieved, due to Ore playing pretty terrible this year. It was kinda neat to see Kenny Lewis, Jr. out there playing instead of the #28. But once Ore got into the game, he played well and it could rate beside his best performance all year. Another player issue was of Vince Hall. This is a quote from the Hokiesports.com Orange Bowl blog, “Hall, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., suffered a bruised left knee while playing in the ocean at Tech’s Orange Bowl-sponsored Beach Party Sunday.” I’m glad to see that our players were out having fun in the sun and not practicing some football like they should have. And this brings me to my last issue. It is becoming harder and harder to support our team, when I feel that the coaches and players do not want it as bad as the fans do. Beamer’s attitude with bowl games (0-3 in BCS games) is just disappointing for such a great coach that he is. I will probably be waiting for the departure of Frank Beamer from Virginia Tech, before I decide to attend another bowl game. Attending the games are not cheap when it comes down to tickets, flights or fuel, food, and all other necessary items needed for a cross-country trip. As a soon to be alum, I cannot see myself spending a lot of my salary to see the Hokies f up again in a bowl.
What was the best thing of yesterday? The SpitzerTailgate…thats what! SpitzerTailgate saw great success yesterday as we pulled into Gate 6 around 11 a.m. Lunch/dinner was served and attendance of the tailgate was probably a total of 20 people that stopped by throughout the day. Pictures of the tailgate will be posted once we return home from Florida. SpitzerTailgate hats were distributed to a mass of people and orders will be taken at anytime through the website.
From Florida, I wish you all the best and I hope that you have forgotten the score of last night’s game as I have.
