SpitzerTailgate in town for Homecoming weekend

October 1st, 2008

burruss.jpg

SpitzerTailgate will be in Blacksburg this weekend for the Homecoming game against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.  This weekend will not really be about the game…but more about re-connecting with the town and its people that gave all of us 4 (sometimes 5) good years of life.  Yes…as they all say…those were the best years of our lives.

If you’re in Blacksburg…stop by the Duck Pond Lot and hang out with us!  Play some cornhole, toss the football, participate in some communion, and talk with your fellow Hokies.  Who knows what will ever happen at a SpitzerTailgate…I sure don’t.  Some of our best tailgates are in our future…and there’s no reason for any of us to shut the door on how dynamic they can be.  Somebody should bring their grandma to the tailgate this weekend…that’s what I want to see happen.  After that…bring whomever.  I’ll talk to your grandpa, too.

Coverage map for VT-Nebraska Game

September 24th, 2008

covmap.jpg

The picture above is the coverage map for this weekend’s Virginia Tech v. Nebraska game.  Only 30% of the United States will get to view the VT-Cornhuskers game, while the other 70% will get to view a Top 25 battle of #22 Illinois and #12 Penn State.

For most of those close to the region of Virginia will be OK to watch the game.  ABC/ESPN has elected to do a split-split-national broadcast for this weekend’s game, which some people will be shutout of the HOKIES game.  Last weekend’s VT game against UNC was a reverse mirror broadcast in that if the game was on ABC regionally, the game would be on ESPN outside of that region.  This is a better approach in order for the majority of people/fans to view a game.

And yes….even those living in Maryland will get the VT-Nebraska game; as long as you get ABC 7-WJLA out of Washington, D.C.  Thank god for living close to that hellhole.

“One of those other tailgates”: Nebraska’s BIG RED MEAT WAGON

September 22nd, 2008

header08.jpg

From time to time, SpitzerTailgate.com gets random emails and messages from fellow tailgating sites; whether it be for college or professional teams, or websites such as TheTailgater.com.  I was recently contacted by the BIG RED MEAT WAGON, a tailgating group for the Nebraska Cornhuskers; our opponent for this coming weekend.  The BIG RED MEAT WAGON is characterized by a couple of things.  For one thing…their unique vehicle stands out in my mind…a red and white ambulance, more commonly known as THE WAGON.  With the tailgates that are centered around the ambulance, one can also receive a “one and only stretcher shot”….yes this involves laying on a stretcher and taking a shot through an IV tube.  What more could you ask for???  This Hokie is speechless…about the tailgate, that is.

I say good luck to the Cornhuskers of the BIG RED MEAT WAGON this coming weekend when the Hokies come to Lincoln, Nebraska.  SpitzerTailgate.com will not be in attendance, but it’s great to see that other colleges throughout the country also have a love for football and also…the ever-revolving and changing world of TAILGATING!!!

SpitzerTailgate.com is proud to announce the new section of “Hokie Girl Perspectives”!  These columns will be written by current students and alumni of Virginia Tech that are also….girls!!! (or women…don’t mean to offend).  These columns will take interesting platforms…whether it be sports or the culture of Virginia Tech.  We will be mainly commenting on Virginia Tech football, as this is the main thing that we care about…right beside NASCAR, God, our family, and….anything else that we deem necessary and important.

I cannot wait any further…I proudly bring to you two new columns of SpitzerTailgate’s “Hokie Girl Perspectives”!!  Refer to the below posts!

“HOKIE GIRL PERSPECTIVES!”: A Furman Review by J-Ho

***THE ARTICLES ARE THE WRITTEN EXPRESSIONS OF THE AUTHORS THEMSELVES AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE SOLE OPINIONS OF SPITZERTAILGATE.COM***

My take, I could write a book…Virginia Tech has a lot of work to do. I am sorry to say I purchased the game on ACC Select only to see the worst video feed ever. The camera was way too close to the play for you to see any development. In fact, you couldn’t see anything beyond the offensive/defensive line width wise. There was no clock so I had no idea how much time was left. I think clearly Tyrod gives the team the spark they need but still feel strongly that Glennon has the better deep ball arm. Tyrod can throw 10-15 yard rockets. Pretty bad offensive play calling, yet again. Everyone knows that the best way to avoid the blitz is with the screen pass or quick slant. Once again defense loads the box and we try to pound it out up the middle which just doesn’t work. I think if ever there is a question of going for it on 4th and 1 Evans needs to be in, QB sneak w/ Glennon, or wait a minute do we have a fullback?

Evans in my opinion is the clear choice for running the ball through the tackles while Lewis is excellent in the open field. I would like to see the option run more with Lewis or the halfback pass out of the backfield. I think the HB needs to do a better job of blocking in pass protection. We need to roll the QB out of the pocket more. I think Tyrod gets the offensive game ball for 100+ yards rushing and completing 4/5 passes for 26 yards (once again very accurate short ball) Defense did well overall. Unimpressed with our pressure on the QB although Orion Martin got into the back field a couple of times. I think Virgil is a standout player and is going to really make some plays down the stretch however, it seems to me that he gets out of position some which could cause us to be vulnerable for the deep ball since the QB has all day to throw. The starting LBs do a fair job of clogging the middle but when Houseright comes its over.

Houseright and his second string cronie leave the TE wide open up the gut as was evident in the 4th quarter TD by Furman. We made some powerful hits this game compared to against ECU so our D must have worked on some tackling. D gameball split between Virgil and O. Martin.

A side note, ECU thumped WVU (#8) which makes me think we might be a little better than my original 3 win prediction although time will tell. Glennon made, in my opinion, some pretty tasteless comments to the Roanoke Times. He is a me not a we player, very disappointed in his comments. I think we will struggle next week against the Rambling Wreck. Our D better bring their A game. Our OL better provide some protection to Tyrod and open some holes for our running game. I look for some pittiful play calling by Stiney. Nonetheless, I am a faithful fan so …. LET”S GO HOKIES!
